Nurses Week & Nursing Assistants Week Ideas

National Nurses Week

   Daily Delight National Nurses Week
Send out sweet messages each day of National Nurses Week. On Monday, declare “Give A Nurse A Kiss” Day and hand out Hershey’s® Kisses. Make Tuesday “Give A Nurse A Hug” Day and distribute Hershey’s® Hugs. Let people in your facility know that “nurses are real lifesavers” on Wednesday and pass out LifeSavers®. Thursday, remind your staff that “nurses have hearts of gold” and provide Hershey’s® Nuggets. Reinforce all of your messages by giving a “Caring From The Heart” Retractable I.D. Badge Holder to each nurse on Friday. Also hold a raffle using the Nurse’s Raffle Prize Pack to award more gifts.

   Star-Studded Event National Nurses Week
Give your nurses the celebrity status they deserve. Build a Walk Of Fame at your facility. Cut out paper stars at least two feet wide each. Write an employee name on each. Under the name, put an appropriate image, for example a baby for a maternity ward nurse. Laminate the stars, and tape them to the floor of a hallway. Have your honorees present when you unveil this Walk Of Fame. Award gifts, such as “Caring People Are Shining Stars” Lapel Pins and “Together We Shine” Magnetic Paperweights.

Surrounded By Support National Nurses Week
Expand your celebration beyond the grounds of your facility. Find out which nearby businesses are frequently visited by your nursing staff. Get permission from the owners or managers to hang up “National Nurses Week” Posters . Provide “We Love Our Nurses” Buttons for the employees of the businesses to wear. See if any businesses will offer items free or at a discount to your nurses during the appreciation week.

   Coupon Collection National Nurses Week
Assist your nursing staff in rewarding each other for a job well done. Design paper coupons marked with point values. Distribute the coupons to your nurses and instruct them to award a coupon when a co-worker is particularly helpful. Offer prizes, such as Deluxe Duffle Bags , “Thanks For Taking Time To Make A Difference” Photo Frame/Clock/Calendar/Thermometers and Microfleece Blankets , which can be “purchased” with the right amount of coupons. Nursing Assistant’s 28-Oz. Translucent Water Bottles . Give “Great Staff, Great Team” Pen Gift Sets to people who finish the whole contest.

   Recognition And Racing
National Nurses Week
Stock car auto racing is one of the most popular sports in the United States. Capitalize on this popularity by throwing a NASCAR-themed appreciation week. Decorate with black and white pennant banners, and set up pit stops featuring snacks. Also, hold a contest in which your nursing assistants create cars out of materials found in your facility. Then allow time for racing the cars. Raffle off toy cars each day. End the week by distributing “Thanks For Going The Extra Mile!” Handy Auto Travel Kits along with words of praise.

Front Door Service National Nurses Week
Perhaps you have held an ice cream social for your nursing assistants in past years. This year, arrange something bigger and better by requesting a whole ice cream truck! Keep the treat a BIG secret. Then surprise everyone by having the ice cream truck pull into your facility’s parking lot, music playing. Lead your nursing assistants to the lot, and let them pick their favorite cold creations. After the ice cream truck is finished making its delivery, give each person a Nursing Assistant’s Cup Of Appreciation to further say thanks.

   Reward Perfection National Nurses Week
Having perfect attendance is no easy task. Plan a ceremony to honor your certified nursing assistants who have been at work 100% of the time. Invite everyone from your facility to be there. Arrange for your local high school band to play. Bring in your facility’s administrator to say congratulations, then present a CNA Translucent Travel Mug and a CNA Double Pocket Tote Bag to each award-winning certified nursing assistant.

   Gift Grab National Nurses Week
Add suspense to your appreciation week gift giving with an activity called “present swap.” Wrap up “Attitude Is Everything!” Gift Books , “Great Staff, Great Team” Sticky Note Cube & Pen Gift Sets , and other presents. Distribute them in the morning, telling everyone to leave them wrapped. Encourage those involved to swap presents all day long. (This doesn’t have to be a voluntary trade. People can make a switch when no one else is looking.) Whichever present a nursing assistant ends up with at the end of the day, he or she gets to open and keep.

   Peaceful Pie National Nurses Week
Help your nursing assistants unwind during National Nursing Assistants’ Week. Offer them an array of desserts, because “stressed” spelled backwards is “desserts.” Either ask non-nursing staff to bake some goodies or request dessert donations from area restaurants. Have Relaxation Mini Tote Gift Packs available at your treat fest. Make sure everyone leaves carrying a Mini Picnic Basket With Chocolates .

Lunch At New Levels National Nurses Week
Does your facility have a flat, easily accessible roof? If so, consider holding a rooftop cookout for your nursing assistants. Take a portable gas grill up there to cook hamburgers and hotdogs. Set up a lightweight table for condiments, buns and chips. Provide blankets for people to sit on, and liven the mood with fun music playing from a battery-operated CD player. Tell your nursing assistants that your facility has been able to reach new heights in patient care with their help. As a token of your gratitude, present everyone with Barbecue Sets .

Survive And Thrive! National Nurses Week
Make the last day of your appreciation week memorable by giving out thoughtful and useful survival kits that you design. For each survival kit, begin with a Nursing Assistant’s Deluxe Backpack . Inside, place bottled water, snacks, wet wipes, adhesive bandages, paper, a pen, tissues and a prepaid phone card. Also include a “Nursing Assistants: A Caring Touch That Means So Much” Sewing Kit With Mirror. Gather your staff members and express how much you care about them. Then pass out the survival kits. If you plan to make the kits again next year, ask your staff now what they would like the backpacks to contain.

Meet Your Co-Workers National Nurses Week
Here’s a National Nurses Week activity which enables your nursing staff to meet people in other areas of the facility. Start by taking individual Polaroid pictures of non-nursing staff. Make sure no name tags are showing. Evenly distribute the pictures among your nurses. Tell these “contestants” that to receive a prize, they must physically find the people pictured and get them to autograph their photos. Use “Nurses: Caring From The Heart” T-Shirts as prizes that can be proudly worn.

Focus On Feet National Nurses Week
Put a new spin on the old concept of guessing games. Hold a “Guess The Feet” contest at your facility. Take pictures of your nurses’ bare feet and post them on a bulletin board. Have your nurses guess whose feet are whose. Award a Roll Up Travel Bag to the person with the most correct answers. Give all participants Star Massager Kits or Pocket Massagers to use on their own feet.
