Seeing Is Believing |
|

Often, people need to experience something for themselves before they’re willing to believe that it can actually happen. With this in mind, have representatives from local police or fire departments speak to prom goers about the dangers of drinking and driving in a way that makes it real to them. Provide the speakers with impairment (drunk) goggles that they can have several students try on to “experience” what it’s like to be drunk. Students should try to maneuver around obstacles with the goggles on. At the end of the program, the speakers can make their message stick by passing out “Be Smart, Be Safe, Be Sober” Mini Torch Lights or “I Pledge To Be Safe & Sober” Silicone Bracelets With Cards to all students who attend.

Teaching Safety |
|
|
|
There are always a few teachers whom students hold in especially high regard. Ask those teachers to speak to students about why it’s important to stay sober, wear their seatbelts and make wise choices on prom night. Invite everyone who has purchased prom tickets to attend the presentation and hold it in an area decorated with “Be Smart, Be Safe, Be Sober” Balloons. Reiterate the message of safety at the end of the talk by handing out “I Pledge To Be Safe And Sober” Pledge Bookmarks and encouraging students to make a promise to stay sober and be as safe as possible. |

In Their Own Wordss

When parents, chaperones and school officials aren’t around after prom, it’s important that students have the information they need to make the right decisions. One way to do this is by inviting individuals who have not made smart decisions to talk about the consequences of their mistakes. (Many rehabilitation facilities require recovering drug addicts and alcoholics to speak publicly about their offenses as part of their therapy.) Organize an assembly where students hear about the lessons offenders have learned. At the end, have all school faculty and staff leave the room so students can ask questions. (Youngsters may be more likely speak honestly if teachers and school officials aren’t there.) When students exit the assembly, have “Smarties® Don’t Drink And Drive” Treat Packs and “Be A Lifesaver: Don’t Drink & Drive” Treat Packs available for them to take.

Give prom attendees an alternative to get-togethers where alcohol may be served. Base a party around the theme K.I.S.S. (Keep It Safe And Sober). Hold “K.I.S.S.ing” contests for your school’s after-prom activity. Rather than actual kissing contests, have games and activities that don’t involve drinking or drug use. There might be poker, charades or volleyball. Hand out “Keep It Safe & Sober” Water Bottles and “Keep It Safe & Sober” Dog Tags for prizes.

A Family Affair |

Parents and guardians have a strong influence on the decisions their children make. That’s why it’s important to involve the family in keeping prom goers safe. Schedule an evening pizza party several weeks before prom that teens attend with their parents and/or guardians. Provide prom safety information to everyone who attends. Have teens sign the “We Pledge To Stay Safe & Sober” Banner with their parents or guardians as witnesses. Then pass out “10 Tips To Help Your Teen Stay Safe On Prom Night” E-Z Stick Glancers to encourage adults to make a commitment to help teens stay safe. |

Provide products at prom festivities that help convey important safety messages. When decorating for the event, put a Prom Message Frame at each place setting. The frame includes a removable card that features a safety-related verse. Also have “Keep It Safe & Sober” Lollipops available in large bowls near exits and entrances. Make sure that the DJ or MC for the event encourages students to take a moment to read the messages on them and discuss them with friends. |
