Math Sums It Up |
Arrange a family learning night in which you teach parents how to incorporate math into family activities. Start by hanging up a “Math Is Sum=Thing Special!” Banner near the entrance of your event location. Distribute “Family Learning Is Fun” Stickers as attendees arrive. Have someone lead the children in math-related games. At the same time, hold a seminar for the parents, detailing practical applications of math. Suggest that they involve their children in real-life situations requiring math. For example, they could have their children add up the prices of products purchased at the grocery store, measure out ingredients in a recipe, and calculate the miles per gallon of the family vehicle. At the end of the evening, hand out “Math Is Sum=Thing Special!” Bookmarks to remind everyone how useful math can be.

Scientific Study |
Generate excitement about science and show students the science-related opportunities available. Bring in professionals from different areas of science (chemistry, medicine, geology, etc.) to do hands-on experiments with the students. Also have them talk briefly about their fields. Supply the volunteers with “Science Stretches Your Mind” Twizzlers to give out. Send the children home with “10 Ways To Help Build Your Child’s Science Skills” E-Z Stick Glancers as tools for parents to provide encouragement in the area of science. |

The “Write” Stuff |
Emphasize spelling, grammar, and word choice in fun writing assignments. Let the kids pick subjects important to their lives, such as family, friends, pets, or hobbies. Then assign a form of writing to each child, such as a newspaper article or biography. On the completed projects, judge the mechanics of the writing. For the fewest spelling errors, award an “I Love To Write” Pencil. For the best grammar, give a “Writing Award” Lapel Pin. For the best overall word usage, give a “Writing Excellence” Lapel Pin.

All In One Location |

To aid parents in helping students get the most out of their childhoods, create a parenting resource station at your school. Place this station in an easily accessible spot. Include a “Smart Parenting” Brochures Information Center. The center features brochures on eight different topics. Also have on hand items from the Parenting Value Pack. And utilize a bulletin board at your resource station to post announcements important to parents. |
