There are many theories as to the origin of Father's Day, but the most popular one in the United States begins with Sonora Dodd. This loving daughter from Spokane, Washington attended a Mother's Day sermon in 1909 and wondered why there wasn't a day to honor fathers, especially due to the love and affection she and her siblings received from her own father, a widowed Civil War veteran.
Because of Ms. Dodd's hard-fought campaign, Spokane began celebrating Father's Day in 1910, and it quickly gained popularity in cities across the country. But it wasn't until 1924 that the idea gained true prominence, when President Calvin Coolidge made it a national event to "establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations". Yet the holiday didn't become "official" until 1966, when President Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day. President Richard Nixon further established it in 1974, when he declared this date as a permanent national observance.
For her tireless contribution to the origin of Father's Day, Sonora Dodd received a special honor at the Spokane World's Fair in 1974. Thanks to Ms. Dodd, Fathers everywhere get the recognition they deserve as well as a celebration every June, and Positive Promotions is proud to help you honor the men in your life with custom gifts that always make a lasting impression.
