Celebrated every year on April 22, Earth Day is a movement that inspires ideas, ignites passion, and motivates people to take action to make our planet a better place to live. The event was founded in 1970 by then-Wisconsin senator Gaylord Nelson, who was moved by the effects of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California to organize a national "teach-in" to educate the public about the environment.

After the coast-to-coast rallies that occurred, attended by some 20 million Americans, many different groups who fought against environmental issues bonded together. Within a year, the movement contributed to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, as well as the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. By 1990, Earth Day grew into a global phenomenon, and today over one billion people in nearly 200 countries will participate, making it the world's largest environmental event. For his role as Earth Day Founder, Nelson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995 by President Bill Clinton, which is the highest honor given to United States civilians.
